From 1st November, additional content will be added to the training that door supervisors are required to take in order to qualify for a licence-linked qualification.

This additional content expands on topics that are already covered in the licence-linked courses - specifically:

  • Identifying vulnerable people
  • Understanding the risks to vulnerable people being ejected from, or refused entry to, a venue, and what actions can be taken to protect them;
  • Identifying the behaviour of sexual predators.
  • In addition, the following content will be added to the door supervision, security guarding and public space surveillance (CCTV) qualifications
  • Identifying and knowing how to report indicators of child sexual exploitation.

Over the past few months we have been approached by various agencies who have identified risks to individuals in the night-time economy. We were asked to consider how our licensing regime can help to make customers of pubs, bars and clubs who may be vulnerable safer. We worked with these agencies to develop this additional training so that security staff have a greater awareness of some of the dangerous situations that customers can find themselves in.

Some of the additional content was adapted from an initiative delivered by Northumbria Police, who had already started delivering training to door supervisors in Newcastle to raise awareness of how to identify and help people who are unable to look after themselves, or are at risk of an assault. We were also asked by the Home Office to ensure that security operatives have an awareness of child sexual exploitation. Such crimes are sometimes committed in areas associated with the night-time economy, so it is important that security staff know what to look for and where their suspicions can be reported.

It is clear that the Government and law enforcement agencies see the security industry as playing a vital role in keeping vulnerable people safe.
